PD-ICT: Digitally Immersed in the Challenges of Learning

I came across this article entitled "Digitally Immersed in the Challenges of Learning" and found that the ideas shared by Shelley Terrell resonating with me because I found myself most engaged when I realized I am learning something through the experiences I was going through.

  1. Name three things you learnt from the article.
  2. Describe two changes you intend to make professionally.

  1. 1) 3 Things Learnt From The Article:
    - As educators, we need to evolve and change to be in tandem with our students' learning needs and prepare them to face the challenges and tap on opportunities in this fast-changing world. This would involve the use of technology in planning lesson packages and learning activities that allow our students to think creatively and critically, as well as to be capable of problem-solving, indepedent learning and collaborative learning.
    - Sometimes, we are already familiar with the technology but we are unaware of it and become apprehensive, skeptical and even fearful when it comes to using those same tools for teaching and learning. We just need to be cognizant of it, internalise this mindset and embrace technology with confidence.
    - To be digitally immersed in teaching and learning, it would be helpful if we plan short-term goals and set out to achieve them, for the process of doing so will aid us in attaining long-term goals and at the same time, the short-term accomplishments will also imbue us with confidence and empower us to be digital educators.
    2) Two Changes I Intend To Make Professionally:
Firstly, I do intend to have one of my ICT lessons recorded for archival, reflection and sharing purposes. Secondly, I would like to look into an ICT tool not used in the local education scene and design a Geography LEAPS21 lesson around its use so as to get my students to have global awareness and learn collaboratively.

  2. 1) 3 Things Learnt From The Article
    a) The importance of continuous learning. Many times we are very comfortable doing what we have been doing and hence stop learning.
    b) Perseverance. When you stopped trying, you stop learning. Picking up a new skill can be frustrating. However, if we always remember the purpose of learning, it will keep us going further.
    c) It is important for us to move forward but it is equally important for us to just pause and look at what we have accomplished, celebrate the little success and motivate each other to go further.

    2) Two changes I intend to make professionally:
Firstly, I think I should improve on my lessons and think of ways to make use of ICT tools to complement the T&L better. Secondly, I would like to explore the new tools that can be used for lesson and share with my colleagues.

  3. 1) 3 Things Learnt From The Article
    a) The idea of learning by doing - Learning by doing is a great way to go through a learning process and really learn from it.
    b) Lead by example - Teachers should lead by examples to advocate learning process, instead of just getting the product.
    c) Teacher training - Good teacher training and teacher exploratory initiatives is important to introduce new teaching ideas and tools.

    2) Two changes I intend to make professionally:
    a) Explore new ideas and new initiatives
    b) Motivate other teachers to be innovative and dare to explore

  4. 1. 3 Things Learnt from the Article:
a)The trend among learners of today and the future is that they are getting increasingly technologically savvy, and one way to engage them in learning is to use ICT tools that they are familiar with, or which they can pick up easily.
b)Many ICT tools enable students to learn by doing,be it using technology to solve problems or to showcase what they have learnt. In this way, certain topics could be made clearer to the learner.
    c) Teachers should be role models for students. One of way of doing so is to pick up new skills and knowledge, and this includes learning the use of ICT tools for more effective teaching.

    2. Two changes I intend to make professionally:
    a) Infuse more ICT into my lessons to spice them up and bring across concepts more clearly
    b) Encourage colleagues to notbe afraid of technology but to harness them to our advantage

  5. 3 Things Learnt
    1) At times, especially when short of time, I tend to rush through the lesson in order to cover as much content as possible. However, this overlooks the fact that the students are unable to absorb everything and thus, may not have actually gotten anything from the lesson. As such, it is important to ensure that the students learn as much as possible on their 'journey' as well as enjoy it.
    2) Technology can transform teaching and learning in many different ways. Although we might be in tune with certain tools, we may not have effectively used them in our lessons. We can further our knowledge in the usage of these tools and be confident when implementing them into our lessons while getting students to think critically.
    3) To move forward with times and know how technology can aid us in accomplishing various goals. No matter how difficult or trying a task may be, there will be a way that we are able to incorporate the use of technology into it. This will enable us to complete our tasks more efficiently and allow us to accomplish more.

    2 Changes
    1) To incorporate the use of technology more into my teaching as well as the students' learning so that they will be able to reap the benefits of using technology in the various areas.
    2) Keep in touch with the advancement of technology as well as new tools that will enable me to carry out my lessons more effectively.

  6. 3 Things I have learnt from the article...

#1: Be optimistic and forward-looking on the use of ICT in education, many times it is going to be challenging trying to convince all to use it with faith and confidence, but we must press on and remind ourselves of the clear strengths and potential of ICT use in education.

#2: ICT-based Collaboration tools needs to be used more broadly but meaningfully.

#3: ICT in education is a ongoing proces that will continue to improve and surprise us. Be it softwares, presentation tools, everyday new products and tools allow us to innovate and re-energise our current lesson packages.

2 Changes I intend to make:

#1: Keep updated with current/new presentation tools, learn to use them as an alterntive to keynote/powerpoint, encourage colleagues and students to use it as well.

#2: Update and revamp my lesson packages to incorporate more meaningful use of ICT for collaboration and learning.
